Artisanal Workshop

This year, Għanafest has teamed up with some of the best local artisans to bring you three workshops on traditional crafts. Experts in their craft, the artisans will present a step-by-step demonstration which will offer a new perspective into these creations.

Workshop 1 – Traditional Maltese Instruments

Join artisan Francesco Sultana in a two-part workshop as he explains the process of building traditional maltese woodwind instruments: the Fleguta/Fifra (Flute) and the Żummara (Reed Pipe). During these workshops, Francesco will demonstrate how to make such instruments and will give some historical insights and experiences. Check out the teaser video below:

Francesco Sultana started creating traditional Maltese woodwind instruments seven years ago in 2013 after he discovered this craft at University. This unearthed a passion for Maltese folk music and the instruments used for it. As an artisan, he hopes to inspire other enthusiasts to learn his craft.

Workshop 2 – Maltese Lacemaking (Bizzilla)

Annamaria Gatt will present a brief workshop on the process of traditional Maltese lacemaking (Bizzilla). She will share tricks and tips into the art of lacemaking, including tools and techniques required to create these works of art. Find out more in this video below:

Annamaria Gatt is a curator for costumes and textiles at the National Museum of Ethnography at the Inquisitor’s Palace, Vittoriosa. Annamaria was always fascinated by Bizzilla, leading her to graduate with a Diploma in Lace Studies in 2007.

Traditional Maltese Ceramics

Part 1

Joan Haber is an artisan and entrepreneur of Traditional Maltese Ceramics. She runs Alka Ceramics together with her husband, Paul, where they produce both contemporary and traditional ceramic objects. Joan is not new to Għanafest’s artisanal corners as every year she joins the festival with simple workshops for children to create their own artworks.
